Florence, Italy, stole my heart during a four-month stay, allowing me to dive deep into the historical streets and discover hidden gems beyond the typical tourist trail. It’s one of the most charming and romantic cities I’ve ever explored, with music, art, and dance spilling from every corner. This city feels alive, from street performers to historical masterpieces around every turn, inviting you to immerse yourself in its captivating culture. The Duomo and the Statue of David are amongst the top destinations for visiting, but there’s so much beauty and history if you explore a little bit deeper.
The Duomo: Florence’s Most Iconic Landmark
The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, known as the Duomo, is impossible to miss with its iconic dome. The interior is just as stunning as the exterior, and it’s a must-see when in Florence. There are four parts to the Duomo:
- The Cathedral: The central part of the Duomo is free to enter, but expect long lines, especially in the summer months. Remember to dress modestly, as this is an active sacred place and requires respect for traditional attire. Viator offers tours inside the cathedral and a skip-the-line incentive which can be beneficial if you have more sight-seeing to do.
- Brunelleschi’s Dome: With a climb of 463 steps, Brunelleschi’s Dome offers one of the most unforgettable views of Florence. This climb requires a separate ticket, but it’s worth it for a close look at Vasari’s “Last Judgement” frescoes and the unbeatable views at the top.
- The Baptistery: Known for its magnificent bronze doors and centuries-old mosaics, the Baptistery showcases artistic heritage in stunning detail.
- Giotto’s Bell Tower: The Bell Tower, which holds the cathedral bells, offers another perspective on the city after 414 steps to the top.
For an enhanced experience, consider a Viator Tour of the Duomo, which lets you skip the lines and brings the cathedrals 1296 architecture to life with a knowledgeable guide. Not only will you avoid the crowds, but you’ll also gain an understanding of this historical masterpiece. Get your tickets here.
As another option, you can purchase the Brunelleschi Pass directly from the Duomo website for $30. This pass includes access to the Dome, Bell Tower, Baptistery, and Museum (the Cathedral is free to enter). Explore ticket options here.
