Living and studying in Florence, Italy, for four months was a dream. Italy truly has it all: breathtaking coastlines, magnificent mountains, vibrant cities, and an unmatched sense of history. Florence itself is a charming, character-filled city where around every corner, there is music, dancing, or art.
While in Italy, I made it my mission to explore as much as possible. From the stylish streets of Milan to the timeless canals of Venice, the ancient wonders of Rome, and the coastal beauty of Cinque Terre, each place offered something unforgettable.

Getting Around: Italy’s well-connected train system makes it easy to explore major cities and towns. High-speed trains connect big cities like Rome, Florence, Venice, and Milan, while regional trains cover smaller towns. For more remote areas, I found buses helpful, and walking around the cities is a must! Renting a car can be helpful in rural areas, but can be challenging in the city centers with limited parking and narrow streets. I’d highly recommend using the trains whenever possible. You can plan your route by simply entering your destination into Apple or Google Maps, which will guide you to the right train and even show you where to buy tickets online!
Best Time to Visit: For pleasant weather and fewer crowds, aim for spring (April to June) and fall (September to October). Summer can be hot and crowded, particularly in July and August, but it’s also a lively time with beach-friendly weather and festivals. Also, a lot of properties don’t have the luxury of air conditioning! Winter offers fewer crowds and chillier weather, making it ideal for exploring cities.
Must-See Places:
- Rome: The Colosseum, Vatican City, and Trevi Fountain, bring the ancient history to life. If you are looking for a younger crowd, the Trastevere neighborhood will be right up your ally.
- Florence: Known for Renaissance art and architecture, check out the Uffizi Gallery, the Accademia Gallery of Florence to see Michelangelo’s David, and of course the Duomo.
- Venice: The canals, St. Marks Basilica, and Grand Canal all give a unique experience.
- Cinque Terre: Five charming coastal villages with stunning hikes and views.
- Lake Como: A beautiful lake surrounded by mountains, perfect for relaxing by the water or enjoying a boat ride.
Safety: Italy is generally safe for travelers. Be aware of pickpockets in crowded tourist areas and make sure to keep your belongings secure.
